Explore The Region - Castetpugon and the surrounding area offers an array of classic French experiences as well as some more exciting opportunities too...

region-map.JPG

The tranquil village of Castetpugon is situated to the north of Pau, in the direction of Bordeaux.  Pau and it’s surrounding areas lie within the Aquitaine/Pyrenees Atlantic region of South West France and the house is a simple 30 minute drive from Pau Pyrenees airport. Flights from the UK: in the summer arrive directly from City Airport. Lourdes airport is a 45 minute drive. Flights arrive at Lourdes all year directly from Stanstead Airport.

Whilst many families rarely feel the need to leave the grounds whilst staying with us, there are plenty of things to do off-site during your rental stay at the villa, should you so wish.

Enjoy the numerous local Fetes. Throughout July and August each of the local villages takes the opportunity to organize it's own unique Fete. Eat the local food, drink the local wines and enjoy the local music. You can experience a different Fete each week throughout the summer months, if you so wish.

As well as local markets, gardens, châteaux, museums and small villages to explore, there are top class restaurants, a golf course, horse racing (and riding), a couple of music festivals, a chance to watch some of the Tour De France plus much, much more.   Some of the highlights are featured below an in the information column on the right of this page.

LOCAL ATTRACTIONS

Gastronomic experiences
Of course, there are many warm and friendly family run restaurants in close proximity to the house - such as Restaurant de la Tour In Lembeye - however, there is also the chance to enjoy some of the best food you will find anywhere in the world.

Our favourites are noted on the right and no stay is complete with out a visit to one of  world famous chef Michel Guérard's restaurants, the best known of which is Les Prés d' Eugénie which has held 3 Michelin Stars since 1977. Our own choice of the Michel Guerard restaurants is the wonderful La Ferme Aux Grives. Beautiful to look at and wonderful food. Also not quite as expensive as the other Guerard restaurants.

Famous regional wines
Castetpugon is surrounded by what is certainly one of the finest wine producing regions of the world. The Aquitaine vineyards produce, in the main, St Emillion, St Mont, Jurancon and Madrian wines.  The area offers a huge number of wine tasting opportunities during your stay.

Indulgent health spa treatments
The nearby health spa, Ferme Thermale® d’Eugénie offers services including therapeutic massage and relaxing spa days which we recommend are combined with the meal of a lifetime at one of Michel Guérard's wonderful restaurants, situated at the magnificent spa complex in Eugenie-Les-Bains; no more than a 20 minute drive away.

Summer music festivals
Music lovers won’t want to miss this world famous annual music event - the wonderful Marciac Jazz Festival.  The festival attracts top musicians from all around the globe who play from late July through to mid-late August.  In 2013 there were appearances from the likes of Diana Krall, George Benson and Gilberto Gil.

There is also the Tempo Latino Festival that takes place in at the village of Vic Fezensac in late July each year.  This features Cuban, Salsa and Latin music.

FURTHER AFIELD

Beaches and surfing
The village is just over 90 minutes drive from the sun soaked beaches of Biarritz and Saint-Jean-De-Luz - ideal summertime day trips particularly if you enjoy the great surfing conditions that exist there.

Summer hiking or winter snow skiing
If visiting during the winter months then you will also be about an hours drive from the beautiful ski slopes of Gourette and Peyragudes in the Pyrenees mountains.  During the rest of the year the Pyrenees offer fabulous hiking trips - or just wonderful drives and restaurants if you are not feeling too energetic.

Spanish trips offering food, film festivals and flamenco!
Northern Spain is a 90 minute drive away. In September of each year the town of San Sebastian holds the internationally renown film festival. There are also wonderful dinning opportunities in world class Michelin stared restaurants such as Arzak.
